The Invitation

Ok, so The Invitation. The drama behind this goes something like this:

1. The Family went to Jakarta, one of the important item on the itinerary; getting the Invitation Cards. Read here on the part of the trip about the Invitation Card.

2. So, we left for home VERY happy because we got a really good bargain on the cards. As discussed with the vendor in Jakarta (the guy who attended to us is Dharnoto) the wordings will be finalised via email. (I also had a secret agenda to change the color of the ribbon from maroon to white, which was to be done via email as well).

3. The emailing started quite late, about 1 month after the trip. Reason: WORK. and I got a little comfortable with the fact that it's still about 4 months away from the date. Dharnoto even texted me reminding me that I have not sent him the wordings...

4. We emailed back and forth for about 5-6 times and exchanged numerous text messages. And took about another month to finalise the whole design of the card. I dont know if this is normal, I was actually expecting maybe exchanging emails twice and everything could be finalised in a week or two? Reason for the long period for the card to be finalised: Partly, MY fault. Hahah. The first time Dharnoto came back with the draft of the card, there were quite a lot of spelling mistakes - which was not my fault, because the draft I emailed him had perfect spelling. What was my fault was the fact that I changed the wordings/design quite a few times, i.e; getting the name of the hall right, the dates for the RSVP, the floral motives of the inside of the card. Ofcourse Bapak also intervened quite a few times changing the dresscode and the MAP.

5. Oh my, the Map. The first map we got was from the hall itself. Bapak was not satisfied, he said the map was not accurate. So I contacted a friend who had his wedding at the same hall and asked for the map they used in their card. Ibu also dug up invitation cards they received where the wedding was held at the same hall. Bapak was NOT satisfied with any maps used. So, he asked his officer to design the map from scratch.

 6. So, the FINAL draft of the card was finalised about 2 months before the date. Dharnoto said they needed 1 month to get the cards ready. (Something that we forgot to ask - TIP: Please REMEMBER to ask about the TIMELINE!) So, we will be getting the cards about 1 month before the date, which is just in time, so we can start circulating all the invites 3-4 weeks before the date.

7. The LACE. I've always wanted a laced card for my wedding card. Something like these:

I found one shop which had a full-laced wedding card, but tooooo expensive. So, (anticipating that the price would be beyond the budget for a full-laced card) I settled with just a strip of white lace to be placed below the ribbon at the middle of the card's cover, like so:

I brought a piece of white lace from Malaysia and gave it to Dharnoto as sample. At the time the order was made; i.e at Jakarta, Dharnoto said he knows where to get the lace. Fine.

Then he emailed me this picture:

YIKES. NOT the lace I gave him and definitely NOT the right substitute. The material of the lace is totally off. It looks like cotton doesn't it? He said he didn't find the lace that I wanted. WHAT? Then I told him that I didn't want that lace and told him I saw the lace that I gave him at Mangga Dua while I was there and asked him to find it there. OMG. Nasib baik he emailed me the lace before sticking it on to my card! Then he emailed me another picture, which was a HUGE relief to me...he got the RIGHT lace this time! I was almost prepared to let go of the lace from the card if he didn't find the lace that I liked.

8.  POSTAGE. This was the REAL DRAMA. Another TIP I can give to those who plans to get their cards from Indonesia, don't get too excited (like me) when you get a hard-covered card which is quite big in size for a really good price. You can definitely get it real cheap, compared than the ones here, because their labour charges are quite low, BUT PLEASE discuss on the postage and the delivery period. TIMELINE is very important! Something I FORGOT to discuss with the vendor! The plan was either; my dad's friend who is working in Jakarta bring it back for us when he comes back for holiday, or my mum and dad come back to Jakarta and bring them home (this only if we needed to get additional things from Indon la) or, they post it to us. The third alternative was actually the first plan. At that time I thought the cost would be a few hundreds and the timeline of the delivery did not occur to me. Guess how shocked I was when I was told that my cards weighed 87kgs and the postage fees is twice the total amount of the cards. WHAT? so now the cost of card has tripled? So, why is it so expensive? Because of the weight (87kgs) and we wanted it to arrive ASAP, like the next day, as we were behind schedule. It was about 1 month before the date. You can actually get a cheaper fare if you can wait atleast 10 days or really cheap if you can wait for 30 days. After much deliberation with the calculator, my parents decided to go for a day trip to Jakarta to bring home the cards. Air Asia tickets was quite reasonable and we pre-booked 60kgs of check-in luggage and the balance of 27kg will be carried as carry on. 27kg is quite heavy, didn't know how my parents managed to get away with it. I OWE them big time!

My card FINALLY arrived at my doorstep on the 7th of May 2011, 40 days before the date.

And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the final product!

9. That's not the end of the Drama. Because the envelope had a window, cards that need to be posted had to be covered with a plastic envelope AND a bigger-fully-covered envelope so that the lace and ribbon would not get dirty. This was actually something I had warned Bapak while ordering the cards at Jakarta, but he insisted to have the window... so, the cost of getting the bigger envelopes was on Bapak :) Then, we found that the RSVP card was toooo small, and I checked with POS Malaysia, it is smaller than the minimum size for a postcard. So, we got small envelopes which we slipped in the card. More extra costs!

Although the cost of the card has now almost more than doubled to what it actually cost, my personal SATISFACTION and all the COMPLIMENTS made it worth it! Hahaha. And, to make me feel better, the cost for the same card if done here is still more expensive. So double YEAY!

TIP of getting cards from Jakarta/anywhere else where the cards will posted -

Make sure you get all these information to save you from sudden heart attacks later :

1. the time they need to complete the cards
2. the total weight of the cards and the estimate number of boxes needed for packaging
3. the postage - the couriers, the cost, the delivery period
4. make sure the size of the RSVP card is the standard postcard size or atleast the minimum size set by POS Malaysia (can check their website).

Then, discuss on the timeline taking into account the finalisation of the wordings, their labor and the postage. It will be better if you already have the wordings (including the doa etc), lay out and map - this will save you a lot of emailing back and forth.

So, I started to get everyone's addresses few weeks ago....which was quite a challenge. I changed phones and lost everyone's number. So, I did everything through FB. I missed out a couple of friends who are not in my Friend's List (should add them now!) and also those who did not have FB (ada orang tak ada FB!).Have been distributing the cards for the past 3 weeks and the last cards have been posted out today (2 weeks before the date - I know, I procrastinated a bit).

Thank you those who had RSVP-ed, attending or not. BELIEVE me, RSVP is VERY handy and actually very crucial for a seated event. People, PLEASE PLEASE RSVP if requested. And if you RSVP "attending", please attend. And if you RSVP "not attending", please do not attend....boleh tak? Hahahhahahaha...the latter can still be kautim lah. But seriously, RSVP is very important for the host.

Everyone I invited have played some role in my life, be it for the shortest time. My guestlist comprised of childhood and highschool friends, varsity friends and office mates. Some, although I have not kept in touch with for a long time, I invite because they were, some time in my life, a significant part of it. Some because they invited me to their wedding, some because they've made nice comments about my engagement :) , and some, well just because I just like them...ahahhaha...Everyone has their own criterias right? I hope I didn't miss out anyone.

11 more days baby!

Feelings: No mood to work but files are still piling, eventhough I have put in extra hours since the past 3 weeks to finish them off...arghhhhh...work never stops, not even for Brides-To-Be.... Feel like going home and do all the wedding stuff. My mind is not at work anymore!

Marriage Approval and Hantarans

Just came back from Advisory Conference in Kuantan last Saturday. Was there from the 14th-16th (Thursday - Saturday).

Remember this post about Aliff going to Jakarta? Well, while I was in Kuantan, received a text from Aliff saying that his boss had asked him to go to Jakarta for one month and he'll be leaving next Saturday the 23rd. What? So close to the wedding already?? His boss has the BEST timing!!!!!! He'll have to be there for a month, but he'll be back in Malaysia once a fortnight. Which is only once lah cause he'll only be there for a month kan. 1 month ONLY ok Mr A. After the wedding please don't take my husband away! *chehhh 'husband'* :)))

Tried to sneak away on Friday the 15th so I don't waste my Saturday on travelling back from Kuantan, but did not succeed. Haih. So, Saturday morning, around 11am, I shoot back home and arrived at about 2pm to continue with the wedding preparations.

With Aliff leaving for Jakarta so soon, we had to speed up with some of the preparations that required Aliff's involvement. So, this is last week's round up:

1. GROOM's FITTING

Once I reached home, called Aliff to pick me up to go to his fitting at Baron's Gentlemen. Fitting was for his Nikah Baju Melayu and Reception Suit. Fitting went well. Aliff was satisfied. The baju melayu was ready, the suit will be ready sometime next week. But since Aliff won't be here, we'll probably pick them up when he comes back.

2. JAIS PROCEDURES

I had planned for Aliff to get his validation from the PPN (Penolong Pendaftar Nikah) of his qariah mosque on Thursday night and then to go to JAIS Friday morning to get the marriage approval. For the qadi, we both wanted this particular ustaz, Ustaz Khairul Jahrin because he was one of the speakers during the kursus kahwin that we attended and he was really funny and nice. So Aliff called him up to book him as our qadi. Coincidentally, he was the PPN for the both of us (we both are under the same qariah mosque - Masjid SS15, because our addresses are so near to each other). So Aliff met with him on Thursday night. Initially I wanted to do mine together with Aliff, but I had to attend Advisory's Conference, so we decided that Aliff did his first. Ustaz Khairul told Aliff that Aliff didnt have to go to JAIS because he works there and he'll do the approval for Aliff. And he said I could bring my wali and witnesses to see him when I come back and he'll also do the approval for me. YEAY. Tak payah cuti to go to JAIS. So, on Saturday night, me, my wali (Bapak), my witnesses (Papa Chen and Adri) and my future husband went to see the Ustaz at Masjid SS15. We filled in the forms and signed where necessary and the rest the Ustaz will do for us.Thank my lucky stars! All that is left is for us to just pick up from him the Surat Kebenaran Berkahwin. Aliff will do that.

3. HANTARANS

On Sunday me and Aliff went to look for our hantaran stuff. The two important and main components of the hantaran was the rings and the watches. Aliff have always wanted a watch. He has this fascination with watches that is waaaayyy beyond my pay check - names like Longines, Breitling, Jaeger- LeCoultre, Audemars Piguet, IWC, Patek Philippe (names I've grown accustomed with since I met Aliff) eeeksss. *telan air liur* ... For me, I guess the usual hantaran item for ladies are handbags and shoes. But I decided for Aliff to get me a watch instead - reason: I don't own a really nice watch and watches are very sentimental and timeless, something that you will always keep and treasure especially the really expensive ones lah kan. Ahaha. So, hantarans, being the Groom's gifts to the Bride, I think a watch is definitely a winner. Unless Aliff can also, in addition to the watch, get me a chanel classic flap bag and a salvatore ferragamo vara leather pumps. Ahahha. Takpelah, tak nak ketuk dia sangat. Kesian dia. Maybe anniversary gifts, Aliff?

Anyway, those are the 2 items that will drill a huge hole in our pockets, so we decided to get them first. We went to BSC at Bangsar.

Watches
Went to this watch chop called Hing's Watch. As i have said earlier, Aliff has a high taste for watches. *Pejam Mata* Itu pun what I got for him was not his first choice. Sabar ok sayang, when I leave this place and make more I'll get you your Breitling or Audemars Piguet or IWC *chehhhh confident jeee boleh ke?* Ahahah. Me, I didn't have a specific preference for watches. Aliff insisted that we should get watches from watch makers and not designer brands. So, I decided to get my watch from the same brand as his. Unless he wants to get me an Omega or Cartier lah kan. Ahaha. So, we got his and hers watches :))))) *matching gitu*.

Rings
We have been surveying for rings ever since we got engaged. I've always wanted a solitaire diamond on a diamond ecrusted band.  The size of the diamond is not so much an issue (ofcourse the bigger the ice the better ;p), but I've always loved a princess cut diamond.



Kakmira's friend, Dila who has a shop at BSC (Poya), who is also a bride-to-be this year,  had recommended Fa'iq Jewel, a jewellery shop near her shop. So we went there, sat for about a couple of hours, got a tutorial on diamond quality (cut, color, clarity, carat etc) and finally decided on THE ring. We decided on a solitaire ring - triple excellent round brilliant cut, colorless, with slight inclusion on a simple four claw band - Aliff preferred a bigger size for the diamond, so, to keep within his budget I had to let go of the diamonds encrusted band. I was ok with it because I will be wearing the wedding ring with my engagement ring which is already a diamond encrusted band. Maybe for our first year anniversary, we can change the band? :)))) And the jeweller there told me that round brilliant is the best cut for a diamond...takpe lah, I'm not so fussy on the ring sangat...don't know why...I didn't have a bridezilla moment that day. Ahahaha. Anyway, the band had to be refitted because I have really small fingers (i'm a size 8). It will be ready this week.  We decided to get Aliff's ring next Saturday before he leaves. Aliff is not so keen on wearing any jewellery, so he insisted that I don't spend so much on his ring, but to allocate more for his shoes (which is also one of Aliff's fetish).

after getting the ring and watch and all,

on the way home we met with a traumatic incident.

put simply, we encountered a person who i pray that none of us will ever meet or become.

someone i will remember and truly curse forever.

i do not pray that you crash your car and die painfully and horrificly,

although that is what i want, but because i have my religion and faith,

i pray that Allah will do justice for me and aliff and every other person

who has had the most terrible luck of meeting you.

i pity your family and friends to have someone like you in their life.

i pity the woman who has been destined to be your companion.

i pity the children that you are going to have and

the generation that will forever be tainted by your existence.

 i pray that these people be given the strength and patience by having you in their lives.

JAKARTA-BANDUNG: LAST DAY

Last day. Woke up at 8.00am. For breakfast, we missed Ibu, Mama Ina and the cousins who had theirs at Burger King, they woke up really early! So they packed us burgers (BK here didn't have breakfast meals). Because we did not want to waste time, since we planned to leave for the airport at about 3.00pm (foreseeing Macet) the initial plan was that at 9.30am one van which consist of the ladies would leave for Mangga Dua first, while the other two vans, the guys, and the grandmother and her maid and the luggages would follow later. This was because Bapak, Syazwan and Haris had to wait for their suits to come at 10.00am.

Suddenly we got to know that Haris was not well, vomitting and shivering. We called the doctor to come to check on him. Probably food poisoning, of what, no one was sure because everyone had the same thing the day before. Haris followed us to have the Sunda lunch, so although my family was fine, we thought probably his stomach couldn't take Sunda food. Then the suits came early, and by the time everything was settled, the plan changed. 2 vans left at about 10.30am. Only the van for the luggage stayed at the hotel to bring Haris and Papa M to the airport. We thought it would be better that Haris stayed and rested at the hotel. After all, Mangga Dua would be no fun for the guys pun.

So, off we went to Mangga Dua in search of the wedding doorgifts/favors for the reception dinner. Cut the story short, we were dissapointed. The choices available were quite off season, nothing that really caught my eyes, what more the Father-of-the-Bride-zilla. Mangga Dua is reviewed to have a lot of nice selections for doorgifts/favors. We probably went to the wrong place, as Mangga Dua is the name of the place and there were a lot of buildings there. FAIL. We didn't have time to move to anywhere else because it would take quite a while to reach due to the Macet. And we did not want to risk moving later that 3pm to the airport because of ... yes, the Macet. So, we went to the top floor and found shops which sold beads and borders which you can use to enhance your materials. Spent most of the time there, there were quite a lot of choices, and cheap. So, atleast something on our last day.

We got a call that our flight was delayed from 6.30pm to 7.20pm. But we decided to leave at about 2.30pm because we were already tired and didn't have anything else to do. We decided to eat at the airport. We reached the airport at about 4.00pm like that. Checked in our bags, ate, shopped around at the airport, mostly of cigarettes for those who kirim.

Boarded at about 7.00pm and reached Malaysia at about 10.30pm Malaysian time. Our flight was delayed because there were problems with the initial plane, so they substituted the plane with an international plane - bigger and had in-flight entertainment. YEAY!

Overall this is my conclusion of the trip:

1. One thing I noticed, Indonesians, atleast the one I encountered during my whole trip, are VERY POLITE! Their language and the way they talk, sooo polite. Compared to the rudeness of "some" Malaysian people that we had the unpleasant experience with exactly prior to our departure to Indonesia.
2. Their textile shops were quite similar to the ones we have in Malaysia - prices slightly cheaper, tapi tak adalah murah gila. But if you're skillful in haggling, you can probably get a lot of discounts. I heard some people were able to get 50% discount. So it depends on your haggling skills. I'm not that skillful in that area. 
3. Try to speak the language and not look like a first-timer or a tourist sangat - some of them tend to open their prices quite high when they notice that you might look clueless and constantly converting. One advice, don't convert infront of them and then make the "murahnyaaa" face. Keep a straight face and look non-interested. They'll lower the prices. Again, it depends on your haggling skills.
4. Pasar Tebet is great for invitation cards. I can't say it is the best because that was the only place I went for cards. And I have yet to see the results. But, for now, I was satisfied.
5. Try to find the right place in Mangga Dua!
6. Taman Sari Spa is the best!
7. We had the BEST Supir ever! Roni was so accomodating and very protective of us. He took care of my grandmother and held her hands when we walked. He made sure that the card person took notes of everything I wanted. He even worked for us on CNY (he's a chinese BTW). He made it soooo much easier for us.

The trip was not a total success, but we had fun. The company was great but probably a little hard to handle because it was such a big group and everybody had different agendas. But it was definitely a great experience.

JAKARTA-BANDUNG : DAY TWO AND THREE

The plan for the second day was Bandung. We chartered a bus which seated about 20 people. We started the day early and moved from the hotel at about 8.00am.

BREAKFAST

Me and Syida woke up late and missed the hotel breakfast, so we asked to stop for breakfast. We stopped at this R&R on the way. We had meehoon soup/bakso. One thing that threw me off was that they know we were Malaysian, they jacked up the price. For a small bowl, they charged us, I think about RP18,0000 which is equivalent to about RM6. According to Kak Su, it was expensive for the size of the bowl. And when we asked how much the Teh Botol was, at first it was RP7000, but then suddenly it was RP8000. So an advice would be, don't look like tourist sangat, and don't calculate the conversion infront of them. Aahah. The bus had a karaoke set, so the 'elderly' karaoke-d all the way to Bandung, while we slept. It was about 2 hours drive, and we reached at about 11am.

 

BANDUNG

First destination was Pasar Baru which had textile shops and telekung and many other things. We went to the third floor I think. There were rows of textile shops. We settled down at this shop called New Angel. Ibu and Syida bought their materials for the reception dinner - beaded lace, chiffon silk and satin. I think the laces-with full beadings were about RP400,000 - 600,000 (RM150++). This shop offered the cheapest price for beaded lace on that floor. Then we went to this shop called Glamour. Ibu bought A-LOT of chiffon here, mostly for her tudungs. She also bought dark blue lace for fun. We also bought materials for the Nikah and reception dinner for Kakmyra and Lulu - chiffon silk and satin. I bought pastel colors of chiffon silk and satin for my Nikah bridesmaids here also. The chiffon ranges from RP20,000/RM6 - 40,000/RM13 according to quality (refer this entry). Satin for lining was RP15,000/RM5 per meter. I also bought white english cotton from King's Textile for RP50,0000/RM16.50 per meter. Then we stopped at this shop, can't remember the name where Ibu bought some telekungs. And a few minutes before the bus came we picked up a few big traditional brooches which we got for RP100,000/RM33 per piece.

At about 1.30pm, our bus picked us up for lunch - again, Nasi Padang. We later went to outlets selling branded apparels. Among the shops that we went were Toko Tiga, Central Fashion and Rumah Mode. All these places were chosen by Kakmira' PIL, since they've been to Bandung quite a few times. Kakmira's MIL was excited for this part of the day. She even texted us at Pasar Baru to wrap up so we can move to these places, especially Rumah Mode. Syazwan did serious shopping. I got a shirt for Aliff and a couple of items for me - non-wedding-related.

We left Bandung at about 7.30pm. On the way back, we stopped for dinner - burgers for a change. Tired of Nasi Padang two days in a row.

THIRD DAY

Third day was supposed to be for Invitation Cards and  Doorgifts for the reception dinner. This was the MAIN AGENDA of the trip, for me atleast.

First destination: Pasar Tebet

This place is like Wedding Card heaven. There were rows and rows of shops providing card services. Because it was just cards, we split the group to two. Me and my family stayed at Pasar Tebet, and the aunts and cousins took the other van to Pasar Mayestik and Grand Indonesia. Haris had to stay with us because there was not enough room in the second van. He didn't mind cause he had Syazwan to hang out with.

So, we hopped from one shop to the other to compare the prices. I brought samples of the cards that I wanted. Eventhough they have ready-made designs, most did not mind modifying and customizing their cards according to your design. This is something I noticed: there were a few shops which had airconditioning - these shops will quote higher price than shops without air conditioning, for the same design. There was one card fully covered with white lace. Cantik sangat. Tapi, RP40,000/RM13 per piece for 500 pieces. Urkkk. Pass

After circling the place for about an hour or so, we sat somewhere and compared the prices. After the short deliberation, we decided to go with Mahkota Print. The first shop we went. The guy who attended to us was Dharnoto. Very helpful and accomodating. The price quoted also very reasonable - you wouldn't get this price in Malaysia. About RP8500 per card (which is about RM2.50): size - about 1' by 1', hardcover, with ribbon. I wanted them to add a piece of lace under the ribbon, so the price per card for 500 pieces was RP9000 (about RM3). Right below than budgeted, so YEAY. Took about an hour to discuss with him the specifics and details of the cards. The card is going to be off white, with black and silver fonts. Initially, I wanted a black ribbon....Father-of-the-Bride-zilla's eyes popped out. NO black. *frust*. Then we settled on maroon, cause that would be one of the theme colors for the reception dinner. I wasn't sure with the color, I was thinking off-white, but i just let it go at the time, cause they thought the card would look dull and I realised everyone were already quite tired by then for me to argue my case. Paid RP300,000/RM99 for deposit. I will be emailing him the contents and map and will probably revisit the color of the ribbon - silently (the email will come from me ahahha). Then he'll prepare the mock-up. After that has been finalised, I'll have to pay another half. And the last half upon collection.

We went there with my dad's friend who was working with the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta, and he said they would be going back to Malaysia once a month or two months, so they volunteered to pick them up and bring them back for us. Awww. We'll see how the arrangement would be when the time comes. Overall, I was satisfied with the card. YEAY. *hopefully everything turns out perfect* After almost 3 hours at Pasar Tebet, Bapak's friend treated us to a Sunda restaurant for lunch. Nice.

Second  destination: Pasar Mayestik (again)

Initially it was supposed to be Mangga Dua. But it was Imlek (Indonesian for CNY), and we were told 90% of the shops were closed. So, we changed the plan to go to Mangga Dua the next day, which is the last day. Last day was planned for free activity, ie, re-visiting any shops that we've been to the past few days, in case there were stuff that we haven't gotten/missed. We still have not gotten some materials that Kakmira had pesan. Can't go back to Bandung, so it was either Tanah Abang or Pasar Mayestik. We chose Pasar Mayestik . We went to Sanggar Textile. Bought a lot of cotton materials, price about RP55,000/RM18 per meter. I bought another 2 pieces of chiffon silk + satin for the Nikah Bridesmaids, found the color that I didn't find in Bandung. This time the price for the chiffon was RP8000/RM3 per meter. Murahhh gila. I see quality about the same je... haih. Whateverlah. I'll have to research about the quality of chiffon silk to see whether we got duped or not. Ahaha.

Third destination: SPA

We finished at about 5.30pm and headed to our Spa appointment. Looked forward sangat  for spa session after 3 days of shopping non-stop. OMG. THE BEST SPA EXPERIENCE EVER. The massage was soooooooooooo good! I took the 1 and a half hour massage + lulur package for RP 435,000/RM 145. Highlight of the day.  They had sauna, in-house swimming pool and saloon. We were rushing for time, so didn't get to enjoy all the facilitieso. Had to go back to the hotel and see the damage done after 3 days in Indonesia and shove everything in our suitcases. The place is called Taman Sari Spa. Totally recommended.
